One of the site visits I enjoyed a lot in our Liverpool trip was the one, when we went to Crosby Beach to see Antony Gormleys work of Another Place. Antony Gormley is a spectacular sculpture, he is well known for his work of the Angel of the North.
His work in Crosby Beach rans along three kilometres of the foreshore, it consists of 100 cast iron, all real life size figures of himself spreading across the three kilometres and stretching almost one kilometre out to the sea. The artwork has been brought to the area by South Sefton Development Trust, a new organisation set up by South Sefton Partnership to continue its regeneration work in the area.
Each Another Place figure weighs 650 kilos, and each iron sculpture are made from casts of the artists own body standing on the beach, each figure is looking out to the sea, staring at the horizon in silent expectations.
According to Antony Gormley, Another Place harnesses the ebb and flow of the tide to explore man's relationship with nature. He explains ' the seaside is a good place to do this. Here time is tested by tide, architecture by the elements and the prevalence of sky seems to question the earth's substance. In this work human life is tested against planetary time.
